About spinach, love and a healthier life

Today I’d like to tell you a love story. I wasn’t sure of the best way to talk about it and tell you how I feel and why this is so important to me to share. So I’ll just start from the beginning.

In this relationship I have been through all sorts of things. I remember the time when we hated each other, then the “cold period” of our relationship.. and a fantastic unforgettable time when I fell in love .. with Spinach.

Hehehe, please don’t think that I’m crazy talking like this. I just believe that spinach is an incredible plant that we often underestimate. I truly believe that it can completely change ones nutrition and even lifestyle.

Of course, Spinach has great health benefits. It’s low in calories yet very high in vitamins and minerals. It’s a very good source  of vitamin K, vitamin A, Magnesium, Folate, Manganese, Iron, Calcium, vitamin C, vitamin B2, Potassium, and vitamin B6. Wow.. That’s not all! Who would have thought hat Spinach is an excellent source of protein too! It’s packed with antioxidants and is much more nutritious that iceberg Lettuce, for example. This list can be very long if I start talking about all the health benefits that the vitamins containing in spinach deliver. Spinach is a heart-healthy food, helps digestion, good for your vision and this is far from the complete list of spinach health benefits.

Ah, yes.. my love story. When I was a little girl I, like the majority of kids hated all sorts of greens. My poor mother always tried to talk me into eating the greens but it didn’t work on me. I hated greens and that was it. Growing up, learning to live on my own and take care of what I eat every day changed that. I still wasn’t a big fan of greens and other healthy eats, even if I was aware of all the healthy benefits and tried to add it to my every day nutrition. There was no drama. I was absolutely happy with my life and my food… Up until the time that I started thinking… oh, you know how to look young forever and all that sorts of things. Thinking of aging and getting fat one day worried me a lot. I just wanted my skin to glow, look young and fresh, my body to be thin and light and yes, ideally to be a couple of sizes smaller:) and all those sorts of thing that almost every girl wants: to be beautiful, look young, be thin. I was worried that I didn’t exercise enough and had quite physically passive lifestyle, was sitting at my desk in the office too long. And yes.. my nutrition was far from perfect. That was it. I needed to make a change.

I started with little every day things. I just added some more green veggies and leafy greens, including Spinach in my every day nutrition. I started regular skiing and then going to the gym. I was changing my life, step by step to a healthier one. And you know what? I loved it. When I said “I added some more green veggies and leafy greens” I meant I started with Spinach. I started experimenting with green salads and found that Spinach is the salad base I liked the most due to its taste and juicy thick leaves. Spinach is almost the only leafy green that you can cook, stir-fry and put in your soup and it will keep its nutritious value. After all, Spinach green smoothies became a real discovery and truly a sensation for me. That’s how my love story started. It’s been years since I made my first Spinach green smoothie. And you know what? I’m falling in love with it more and more every day.

I love that I can “play” with its taste simply by adding different ingredients such as fruits, berries, other greens, veggies etc. It can significantly change the smoothie taste. I can have my Spinach green smoothie every day, never get bored of it and still get all the healthy benefits. Isn’t that amazing?

I fell in love with Spinach by making a little step to a healthier life, trying to change my every day nutrition. I loved it simply because when you have lots of greens every day it’s not just good for your health but it makes you to feel and look fabulous. Eating lots of leafy greens might be boring though. Unless you find your own way to love the greens. My way was the Spinach green smoothie.
